Well, I wasn't sure that I was going to be able to actually get the buns done in time to do Santa Lucia this morning, but Joseph was so set on doing it, that he went to bed (skipping our reading of Harry Potter) and pleaded with James to stay in bed and be quiet. Aside from a bunch of other chaos that happened in the house, I made the saffron buns, staying up late, as usual, to do it - hey, why break tradition?
It was fun this morning. Instead of me getting the kids all ready to wake Erik with light and song, Erik got them dressed, while I fed Jalen Andrew and created a little cocomotion in the kitchen (made hot cocoa in my cocomotion machine). The kids came down the stairs singing to me. It was a nice twist.

Jalen, true to Brewer baby form, did not want the saffron bun, and instead threw it across the table. The kids were shocked, but I assured them, that when he was 2 years old he would like the buns. Erik, self-sacrificing as he is, ate Jalen Andrew's saffron bun for him. What a good guy! Jalen Andrew, did however, very much enjoy his gingerbread cookie and hot chocolate.

Christine's contribution to the parade of light . . .

And as the kids each left the table to go and get dressed for school, Erik remarked, "It sure does my heart good, that the kids like Santa Lucia so much, just like I did growing up." And that is why we celebrate Santa Lucia!
